About Us

New Zealand

 Hi There!

We are Tim and Pam. A pair of newly married lovebirds on our honeymoon, exploring the world from every rooftop, cave, or hovel with a decent hot shower.

Starting in late 2015 we were inspired to travel, like many of our peers, we saw – either on social media or on blogs – people sharing their experiences during their travels. In that spirit we began our first trip around the world and most importantly we began to share our journey every step of the way. As we overcome challenges and discover better ways of travel we want to share that knowledge because we want to see others accomplish their dreams as well.

There were many questions we had when we left, who would take care of our pets? What would we do when we get back? How are we going to survive on the savings we had? What surprised us was how life has a way of working itself out, however we did need to get creative.

After spending several months outside our home country we found that being able to adapt was important to surviving on about $25 per day per person. What works for us may not work in every instance, but is the product of hours of research and field testing. Traveling doesn’t have to be expensive, in fact it can be cheaper traveling than staying at home! Fortunately, both of us are naturally frugal people and even had a binder full of organized coupons for our weekly shopping trips. One of the ways we save money while traveling is by walking. If it’s less than 45 minutes away by foot then we will walk instead of taking public transportation, we save money and see more sites. Many people may call that ‘super cheap’, we call it a win-win.

ThriftyTrails.com

This site originally started as a way to keep family and friends informed and updated on our travels. It slowly turned into a medium of keeping track of our experiences but also as a way to share useful tips we learned along the way. Now, this site is for everyone who has the travel bug but wants to do so in a budget friendly manner. If you desire luxury travel and 5 star hotels then this might not be what you are looking for, but if you want to learn about free or cheap things to do around the world, just as the locals do, then you came to right place.

One of Pam’s favorite sayings is “If it’s free, it’s for me”.

We hope to tell a story about our travels with each post while we inform you of our recommendations. Travel tips are more than just notes and recommendations, they are our personal advice distilled from difficulties, successes, and everyday activities. Whether you decide to follow our tips or not we hope that our contributions can add to the plentiful information available online.
